Today is a big day for me – it’s my 50th birthday! In honor of this milestone, I want to dive into a topic that’s been a personal challenge for me most of my life, and something I’ve been actively working on overcoming, especially over the past year.
Imagine standing on a stage, a sea of faces looking up at you, waiting for you to speak. Your heart pounds in your chest, your palms are sweaty, and a million thoughts race through your mind. What if they don’t like what I have to say? What if they disagree or think they have a better solution? What if they judge me?
As podcasters and creators, we often find ourselves on this metaphorical stage. Each piece of content we create is a performance, open to scrutiny from our peers and the public. The fear of judgement and failure can be overwhelming, often hindering our creative process and authenticity.
Even as I write this, I’m familiar with these hesitations. Am I using the right words? Will this resonate? Is it too long, too short, or just right for SEO? These doubts, rooted in fears of judgment and failure, have been my companions, especially as I ventured wholeheartedly into social media over the past couple of years.
I tried navigating the vast world of social media on my own, but the nagging thought of not “doing it right” led me to seek guidance. While I learned the intricacies of engagement and the do’s and don’ts, I realized I was letting these rules dictate my content. My quest for the perfect post overshadowed the essence of my message.
However, a shift occurred over the past few months. I recognized that my most authentic moments, the times I truly connected with my audience, were when I was in the flow, enjoying the process. Success wasn’t just about numbers; it was about genuine engagement, attracting potential clients, and most importantly, feeling confident in my content.
The more I leaned into my style, allowing lessons to guide rather than define my approach, the more confident I became. This confidence translated into content that was unmistakably me, building trust and a deeper connection with my audience. This is what we’ll explore today- breaking free from fear and embracing our unique voice as creators.
Fear of judgement can lead to a lack of authenticity. We worry about how our content will be received, leading to what we often term as “creator’s block”. But in reality, it’s not a lack of ideas, but rather a fear of how those ideas will be judged.
Similarly, fear of failure can hinder our performance. We worry that our content won’t be good enough, won’t get enough plays or views. This fear can be particularly amplified by the pressures of social media, where the quest for the perfect “hook” to stop the scroll can overshadow the actual content.
But here’s the thing: these fears, while they feel incredibly personal, are universal. Almost every creator, at some point, has felt the fear of judgement or failure. Recognizing this can be the first step towards overcoming these fears.
As creators, we can become so determined to succeed that we become overly dependent on expert advice. We follow their do’s and don’ts, their “can’t lose” formulas, to the point where our creativity suffers. Our content becomes more about the strategy and less about the content itself.
While it’s extremely valuable to learn from coaches, consultants, and successful creators, it’s important to remember that their advice is a guide, not a strict rulebook. These experts provide insights and proven strategies, and the key to success lies in how we, as creators, adapt and apply these lessons to our unique situations. Working with experts can significantly accelerate our growth and success. And, it’s our responsibility to take the lessons that resonate with us, apply them, and experiment. If something doesn’t work, it’s not a failure. It’s a step closer to success.
Some of the most successful podcasters, social media influencers, artists, and musicians are those who created their own successful formulas. They took pieces from multiple tested formulas, experimented, and found what worked for them. They broke free from the norm and did it their way.
Harnessing the Power of AI in Content Creation
A tool that has helped me build up even more confidence in my content creation journey has been the integration of AI tools, particularly ChatGPT. Remember those moments of staring blankly at a screen, waiting for inspiration to strike? With ChatGPT, that’s a thing of the past. It’s like having a brainstorming buddy available 24/7, ready to help me flesh out ideas, provide feedback, or even kickstart the creative process. If you haven’t tried ChatGPT yet, here’s a video we created to help you get started.
Instead of hoping for that next masterpiece to magically appear, ChatGPT offers a platform where your content does seems to manifest. It’s an unbiased space to share, refine, and store ideas, ensuring they’re accessible whenever inspiration strikes. Beyond just ideation, this tool has been invaluable for research, catering to my target audience, and analyzing content to continuously improve.
And as technology continues to evolve, so do the opportunities for creators. Embracing these advancements, like AI, can be the catalyst that propels us forward, breaking through barriers and redefining what’s possible.
So, as you navigate your journey as a podcaster or creator, remember this: your unique voice, your unique perspective, is your greatest asset. Don’t let fear of judgement or fear of failure silence that voice. Experiment, learn, grow, and most importantly, create content that is authentically you. Because that’s where true success and joy lie.
