Google Announces Gemini 1.5 Pro

A colorful, stylized funnel filled with swirling data elements, including abstract video frame shapes, green lines of code, and audio waveforms, converging down the funnel. The colors and symbols are meant to represent the massive amounts of data that Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro model will be able to handle with it's 1 million token context window.

Google just released their Gemini Advanced model, based around Gemini Ultra 1.0, within the past week. But that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to make a strong push forward in the AI race.

The tech giant recently unveiled Gemini 1.5 (aka Gemini 1.5 Pro), a powerful upgrade to their established Gemini 1.0 AI model.

Let’s talk about out what that means.

What’s Got Everyone Talking: Gemini 1.5 Bringing Key Upgrades

Unprecedented Token Limit

Gemini 1.5 Pro has the ability to process up to 1 million tokens! For comparison, GPT-4 maxes out at 128,000 tokens.

But what does that actually translate to for creators like you and me?

1 million tokens translates to the equivalent of analyzing 1 hour of video, 11 hours of audio, 700,000 words, or a massive codebase (30,000+ lines) all at once.

No AI model has shown anywhere near this type of context window or memory.

Gemini 1.5: A Better, More Efficient AI Model

Under the hood, Gemini 1.5 Pro features an optimized Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture. Simply put, it’s smarter about allocating its ‘brainpower’, matching tasks to specialized pathways within the neural network.

What does it all mean?

Better results for you while using less computing power.

The next logical question would be, how could it be better when it has so much more information to sift through on a 1 million token context window?

Can Gemini 1.5 Pro Find the Needle in a Haystack?

To test the theory that Gemini is indeed a better overall model, Gemini 1.5 Pro was put through a Needle in a Haystack (NIAH) evaluation. In this test, developers inserted a small bit of information into a large block of text to see if the AI could pinpoint it.

Google said Gemini could identify this embedded text 99 percent of the time in datasets up to 1 million tokens.

Building AI You Can Trust

Up to this point, we’ve seen Google’s AI progress come at a significantly slower pace than that of its AI rival, OpenAI.

Google’s emphasis on safety and ethical AI use have come up a lot when discussing the rollout of their new AI advances. Gemini 1.5 Pro is no different.

Google has given out a limited release of this new AI model specifically for feedback and testing of it’s ethical and safety governance processes. The goal: to continue refining and making the AI safer for a widespread rollout.

How Do I Get Gemini 1.5 Pro?

Right now, developers and enterprises can try it out in the limited preview via AI Studio and Vertex AI.

Google will soon release a tiered pricing model for Gemini 1.5 Pro, with options starting at a standard 128,000-token context window and scaling up to the powerhouse, million-token level.

The Takeaway

Gemini 1.5 is just another major push Google is making to position themselves at the forefront of the AI race. Its massive file handling, video capabilities, and ability to truly interpret the bigger picture could fundamentally change how businesses operate. Not to mention, finally giving OpenAI some real competition.

With two major players in the game now, we’ll soon start seeing AI being pushed to it’s limits beyond what we’ve already witnessed just within this past year.
